THE RT ANS IS -john adds chemicals of unknown identity to the mixture (it seems more apprpriate) and the furniture has been changed(furniture taken as singular noun)

The second sentence is less awkward and doesn't contain a misplaced modifier. If someone were to hear the first sentence they would not know what John was adding, they might think he was adding himself to the mixture. Drop the "chemicals of unknown identity" from the first sentence and you'll understand.

The second one is correct grammatically and also giving proprer sense to the sentence so that one can understand properly what is being said.
