In the old days, when you became a priest, one of the marks was that you had to place a hot iron frying pan on top of your head when you joined the priesthood. This burnt the hair off in that spot. Incidentally, this is why these holy men were called "friars" because their hair had been fried off.

One of the Orders of religiuese had (or has) the 'stamp' if you like, of a hole in the head . . er . . hair as a sign of their devotion. Movie makers have latched onto this and now always portray monks wearing a big brown bag, a hole in the head and a stupid benign grin.

To control lice!
