First responder is correct. Coal is also used for refining iron and for space heating, although that use is much less now than in years past.

yes, electrical generation. most steel is now manufactured over in asia and india. however, the future use of the 280 trillion estimated tons of coal in the USA is for processing into motor fuel and such. The process was just "rediscovered" that hitler's scientists developed in WW-II.
