I just wanted to know how exactly the card works, why it is so much more expensive than a cell phone (if it does the same thing), and what type of monthly plans are available through Verizon (or another provider).

Verizon offers the internet through a Wireless PC card that fits into a slot on the side of your laptop. There are two different types of plans. One plan is called Broadband Access which gives you about 400-700 kbps of download, speed which is extremely fast almost comparable to DLS. The price for this plan is $79.99 per month for unlimited usage.

The other plan called the National Access plan which gives you about 60-80 kbps of download speed which is about the speed of a dial up internet. The price for this plan is $59.99 for unlimited usage.

With these two plans you are able to use the internet at any location anywhere and anytime with your laptop. You do not need to be connected through your home network or office but have the convenience of using the internet anywhere and any public location. For this reason there two rate plans which are somewhat high in price. Remember that this rate plans do not include any voice or cell phone minutes. This is only for data (internet).
