Absolutely it can work and with all due respect to those responders that have spoken against it ... do your homework please ... you won't seem as ignorant that way.
This is not a "Republican" plan ... in fact the author of the fair tax, Neal Boortz strongly believes that the Democratically controlled congress is one of the best chances that the Fair Tax stands to pass. Many "Republicans" don't like it ... it is more of a Libertarian ideal. It is a tax on consumption ... not a regressive (progressive) tax on income which only serves to stifle economic growth in this country.
Likewise it hasn't "been around for 100 years" ... even Income Tax hasn't been around 100 years. And this is not a "flat tax" like Steve Forbes proposed about 15 years ago. Being a tax on consumption the bulk of federal tax will be paid on the purchase of excesses ... such as buying Lobster Tail and Caviar for dinner every night with little or no tax on the working family buying ground beef to economically feed their family. Sounds like something the Liberals would be in support of now doesn't it?
Haven't convinced you yet? How about this one ... under the current tax system "income" from illegal ventures like smuggling, drug trafficking, stealing, etc. is not taxed ... no one reports income from illegal ventures. Under the fair tax, these individuals WOULD be paying taxes on that money they "earned" through those illegal ventures ... billions of dollars of tax revenue every year.
Need still another reason? How about eliminating the IRS and the waste of filling out tax returns every year. Disposing of the 20,000 page tax code AND the 500 million dollars it costs every year to collect and process taxes instantly becomes economic growth and not just wasteful spending.

It's not just a good idea ... its a system that is long over due.

Yes. The federal income tax was never supposed to be a permanent source of income for the government. But it was convenient. I would agree that a federal sales tax (perhaps the FairTax proposal or another form of some kind) on all goods and services purchased in the US would be a better idea. The Government would end up bringing in more revenue with fewer complaints from the working class America.

I believe the FairTax is the best. Abolish federal income tax, state income tax, and sales tax. Neal Boortz, who I listen to every day on the radio, is preaching this all over the country. You should get his book and find out for yourself. It just seems fair that everyone pay the same rate of tax.

I don't have time to go over it right now, but from what I heard, I wonder if it is fair or just another benefit for the rich. I worry sometimes when a repuglicans talk about any thing fair.

Please read the 16th Ammendment to the Costitution. That's the one that makes income tax constitutional.
As for the "fair tax"--no offense, but it's a dumb idea that's been around for over a cenury--and has never been enacted because it won't work.

Sorry but the Supreme Court has said that the income tax is constitutional. Has done so since the 1940's so please try again.

They both suck as they make the least able to pay pay the most, the working poor and the middle class. Beware of geeks bearing gifts.

flat tax is best, no taxes for income below $50,000, 20% up to $ 200,000, and50%for anything above that.
