Is the award supposed to go to the player that makes their team better? Is it supposed to go to the best player? Is it supposed to go to the best player on the best team? How would YOU define it if you had a vote?

MVP = Most Valuable Player

The player that takes their team up a step, improves the players around him, and most importantly gets Wins and not just stats.

I agree with wizexel, the MVP is simply the best player on the best team, not who is actually the most valuable to the team.

The weird thing is, I think Nash and Dirk really deserve the award also. But Kobe should at least be in the running too.

Dirk will win the award for sure. Kobe just doesnt have enough wins. And Nash, he will get some backlash because he won the past 2 already. I don't think the writers/voters will grant him 3 straight and vault him into being one of a handful of greatest players of all time. (Kareem 6, Russell 5, Wilt 4, Jordan 5, Magic 3, Moses 3, Bird 3)

The MVP award goes to the player who's performance propels his team to the upper echelon of the NBA...or um, the best player on one of the best teams. Usually they go hand and hand, but in some instances it has gone to the best player regardless of team success, because their individual performance was so far above and beyond everyone else's. But they must at least have a winning record. I don't know of any instance where a player has won MVP and his team not make the playoffs. So for the most part it's been the best player on a really good team who wins it. That's the way i'd vote.

Historically, the MVP is simply the best player on one of the top 2-3 elite teams. All the debate is pointless cuz thats how most writers vote.

I think this isn't the best way or how I would vote. Yes, I think wins is important...but the way they vote, it should be called the MVPBT , the most valuable player on the best teams. I like to think of the most valuable player as ....well....the most valuable player. That is, what player brings the most value to his team and how much worse does that team get without him?

Thats why my vote right now for MVP is Kobe. I'm a big fan of Nash, and Dirk too. They are great players and should be in the running. But then again, they have way better teams. You can give a lot of credit to Nash and Dirk, but heck, you gotta throw some love to Amare, Marion, Josh Howard, Terry, Barbosa, etc etc.

The fact is, although the Suns and Mavs wouldn't be elite without those guys, both teams are still low playoff teams without them. The Lakers without Kobe is lottery bound for sure. Kobe has it pretty rough and he has to carry his team like noone else. In that streak of 50 pt games, next to the Portland 65, I think the 43 against G.S. was the most impressive. He didn't get 50...but he was double teamed and trapped the WHOLE game.

Dirk or Nash will win the MVP for sure. And the sad part is, Kobe has been making history the past 2 seasons.....and he might not have even a single MVP to show for it at the end of his career. Tragic.

The basketball player with the most player development and overall game.
It's still contestable, but Steve Nash will get his third. He has truly been a catalyst for the NBA the last couple of years. You wouldn't meet a nicer person or a more determined athlete in the NBA than Steve Nash.

The League MVP is the player on a top ranking team that the coach bases everything around, both defense and offense.
