I would really like to add a phone jack, or even just a wire coming out of the wall, in my garage. On the outside of my house, is the telephone companies service box and i opened it and saw that the red and green wires were being used, so i know its those i would need to tap into. Now, what is the easiest way to go through the wall in to the garage? should i go into the attic and find the telephone cables and tap into there, or tap into the wires from the outside and drill through the wall to the garage? I would like to do the second option, but i'm afraid i might drill through an important wire running some of the rooms in my house!!! the spot where the telephone service box is, is right underneath the main circuit breaker in the garage, the box with pretty much all the power running to the house!

WHAT DO I DO!?!? ANY help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks,
Cory

p.s.- i DO NOT want to pay an electrician to add a line because last time it cost $175!!

The phone box that I have on the side of my house has two compartments. One is the customer access used for adding more phone jacks and the other is the phone companies access which opens both the customer's compartment and the phone companies compartment.

I would make a run from the phone box directly into the garage. If the wall you are drilling through is frame, wires are typically stapled to the studs inside so if you can drill in between two studs, you should not hit any wires. If the wall is masonry (cinder block or poured concrete) it is uncommon for wires to be run inside these walls in a residential situation.

Another option, you can also use a cordless phone. I have a 5.8 GHz cordless phone in my detached garage (100 feet from the house) and it works great. It is a multi-extension phone system with the main base is in the house and it has the extension units come a charging base

from the tel.box which is called a network interface open the side which says customer you should have at least 4x3 inches of empty space underneath the inside wiring blocks r/gr and y/blk an 18v cordless drill with 1/4 inch by 16 inch bit drill into that space ...the reasoning is that you should see where the existing wire comes out.Drill alittle above and straight.you will feel the bit travel through exterior wall then insulation then interior wall.ok now your through dont take the bit out yet, bore the hole for a minute go inside at the end of most long bits is a small hole ,strip back the new inside wire, and place one of the conductors through the hole.tightly wrap with one layer of black tape this is now your fish from outside pull gently twisting bit if needed.Connect 1 pr r/gr to existing service, polarity will not matter unless you still have a party line!use a T-18 staple gun and staple the wire starting at the furthest point of jack location.the jack or rj11c is found in any store and is self explanitory.drill slow any foriegn objects inside the wall will be felt and if going slow your saftey is not jepordized.

I like to keep things net so I would see if I could bring it down the inside of the wall & not through it if I had to have it.

I would rather just get a cordless phone that has two handsets & leave the base in the house & use the charger out there. If it is for DSL use a wireless router & nic card.

Wireless is a grate thing.

I hope you the best of luck.

easy... use the phone co outside box ..run cable a few feet away from any boxes before doing any drilling never tap any electric box low or high voltage because you need a good connection..good luck

we bought these phones and you don't need a jack just an electrical plug. One base plugs into the phone jack in the house and the other just plugs into an electrical plug. http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100419&navAction=jump&navCount=1&id=prod2474178
