I need to memorize a 500 word essay by tomorrow. I tried just straight-memorizing, it seems ineffective to me. Any suggestions? Thanks.

if it's okay that you dont say it word for word, i suggest that you memorize the overall structure of the essay..know the topics you're going to cover n just keep running through the entire thing over and over..if possible/allowed make note cards of key facts....also maybe next time dont wait until the last minute

flash cards are great although I've never used them for memorizing an essay. I'd say to use flash cards and try a sentence on every card. Straight memorizing won't work as well because it isn't broken down and you might not be able to visualize it in clear pieces. Flash cards can help. If you do this, try memorizing the first sentence first and then the second and every time you go on to another sentence you start back from the beginning again (ex: 1, 12, 123, 1234, etc.). The key is repetition although it may be hard to cram this all in one day.

in one place I was at they memorized whole sections by writing the first letter of each word down then going over it repeatedly. Having the first letter helps to remember the words in order and you would be amazed at how much you can learn in a short period of time

try memorizing it a portion at a time. making mental images helps too. lastly, try to get sufficient sleep. a relaxed mind that had enough rest does help, promise.
