64 teams (65 with the play in game) compete to see who is the best team in the entire nation for their division that takes place in March.
The winner brings home the honor and the bragging rights of being the best team in the nation, along with a trophy and a donation to the school's scholarship fund.
The Madness is trying to predict who will win the games throughout the bracket. It's single elimination, win or go home. This makes it possible for any given team on any given night to win, not matter what the statistics say or the experts pick or what the team's rank is. It will drive people nuts, mostly because there are betting pools and its almost impossible to routinely pick the correct winner.
With all those teams, a person must keep track of their own picks and research the many possible teams they could match up with further down the line. A large amount of time is devoted to this and it all comes down to who plays the best on that night.
Insane huh?

It started off when an official in Illinois commemorated a local high school basketball tournament in 1939 and it was later picked up by fans of the NCAA in the 80s.
The winner pretty much gets a trophy, but the school really receives much of the accolades.
Indirectly the school's prestige raises and many sponsors like Sports Illustrated pay the winning school money to be in their magazine and part of marketing their campaign.

More like 64 teams. Most of these games occur in March, and many at the same time, all month, thus inducing the Madness. The winner gets this trophy, and I think some money for the college as well.
