I used to think cheerleading was a joke. I grew up an athelete and spent every day working to better my skills. I thought cheerleaders were fluff. Then I had a daughter who joined a cheer squad and I realized it is hard work to be a cheerleader. They must be in good physical condition and most cheerleaders have gymnastics and some also have ballet in their background. There was a time when cheerleaders were just pretty fluff but as our culture has grown, so has cheerleading. Cheerleading is no longer just girls jumping in unisen and shouting simplistic cheers. Their routines are complex and often involve a lot of tumbling. The dangers involved in some routines are more than some sports. So ultimately yes Cheerleading has grown in to be a sport.

No cheerleading is not a sport because it requires judges to make the final decision, i feel that a sport is something where the teams decide the winners not an outside person. However, cheerleading is a competition and Im not saying that it is not tough, I give a lot of credit to the cheerleaders who have amazing strength and are probably just as tough as some athletes but due to the face that it is about impressing a judge to win, it is a competition (though very hard) and not a sport

Cheerleading, as such, is not a sport. A sport usually has a goal, a set of rules for acheiving that goal, and points awarded for achieving steps towards achieving the goal.

There are, however, cheerleading competitions, which may be considered a form of sport.

Yes. I have never been a cheerleader but I have gone to some cheerleading practices.

The tumbling and gymnastics done require training and practice.

There are two types of cheerleading: sideline cheer and competitive cheer.
In my opinion, sideline cheer isn't. It is more of an extra activity, because you're there to support football.
But competitive cheerleading most definitely is. It is completely different from the football games. WAYY more physically demanding.

I don't believe that cheerleading is a sport unless it is at the college level where it goes completely insane with throws and stunts.

Actually since the injury rate in cheerleading is actually higher than the football teams they root for, yeah I guess it is.

people think it's just a bunch of people jumping up and down shouting "go team go!!!" and wearing short skirts. but thats not what it is.
cheerleading is deffinitly a sport. you have to work really hard, just like in any other sport. you have to do conditioning, lots of practices, and dedication and hard work.
i have to go but if you want more, email me.
