If he liked the Lord of the Rings movies, try grabbing a copy of the old Rankin Bass version of "The Hobbit" as it is all about travel and discovery and adventure. Also it gives you the story of Bilbo and how he got the ring. It is very G rated and quite fun. Plus it has a good story.

Another one he probably hasn't seen that he might really enjoy is the old fantasy movie "The Dark Crystal" which I still find enjoyable. It is G rated to be sure, but it isn't as childish as some children's movies and has a very good story. Jim Henson's magnum opus, that has nothing to do with the muppets.

These two films, I think, would set a very unique mood for a field trip, as they are both rather surreal and almost calming yet entertaining.

If I was going to suggest something more appropriate to a car trip, the obvious answer is of course, "Cars" by Pixar. And I'll be willing to bet money him and his buddies have already seen it a million times. Otherwise, it's a perfect choice.

Can't really think of anything truely unique that might entertain besides what I've already offered.
