~Absolutely. Mainstream music of the forties roused people to support the war effort. The rock 'n roll of the fifties introduced white teenagers to the R&B's "black" music and led indirectly into the civil rights movement. The music of the sixties certainly influenced a whole generation of young people to become politically involved in their government and to affect positive change in society. The psychedelic music of the seventies made drugs exciting and enticing. Now we have gangsta rap music encouraging kids to be gangbangers, drug dealers and pimps.
And folks worried about the kids growing up in the sixties? Most of them went to college and became productive citizens who vote, volunteer and are still trying to solve society's problems. I wonder what the gangbanger, drug dealer and pimp wannabes will turn out like?

I think people who are easily influenced could be, yes. I think it has been shown that people who are really depressed or on drugs sometimes try to do what the songs say - including killing themselves. But, for normal people, the answer is no. I have never been influenced to do or not do something because of music.

In some cases, yes..it all depends on the person and how they interprete the music in their lives. If a person is vulnerable, then ofcourse things like music would motivate them to act in ways that they might otherwise not even think of. Also, if a person is in a situation that relates to the type of song or music that they are listening to, they might just be influenced because of their vulnerability at that moment. It happens to me...

Totally! We also tend to listen to the music that reflects our moods most of the time! I have a song for almost any mood I can go through...I've become very good at finding the song to boost me, console me, make me happier , etc...Music is an emotional tool that can be also powerful to heal the soul.

Absolutly. There has been times I'm listening to music I grew up with, and I'm feeling like a kid again, times I listen to romantic music and look tenderly at my hubby, ( usually I don't even look at him, lol) and then times I listen to bee bop, and I dance around the house like a Solid Gold Dancer. Music definately empowers the mood!

No, personally I chose music because it reflects my moods and actions.
I also believe that all art is influenced by society...not the other way around.

Well, that depends on how dependant you are on music. People depend their actions on different things, like their job, or their kids, but for us young people who are bored, we can turn to music.
I use music to help me express my feelings (i just emailed "My Happy Ending" by Avril Lavigne to my very first ex-boyfriend just recently, he didn't listen to it, but oh well, his loss). Sometimes It helps me clear my head and think straight, sometimes it helps me to cry and express that certain pain to myself, and sometimes it will lighten my mood.
It can influance their actions. Some artist like to sing about death and hatered. Kids listen to songs like these and then become comfortable with the ideas of taking drugs to soothe their pain, or killing themselves when life gets out-of-whack.
Not that their dumb kids or anything. The artists should be aware of the messages their music is putting out.
Answering your question: Yes, it CAN influance people's actions and emotions.
