I give my noisy chatterbox daughter a buck to play quietly for an hour so I can get some work done.

That's a silly question. It depends on what you want. If you're crawling through the desert and you're dying of thirst, and you come upon two vending machines and one is selling bottles of water for a dollar, the other is selling ten-carat diamonds for a dollar, then you'll spend the money on the water. the water's a better value for you in that situation.

That being said, for me, most of the time I consider a dollar spent on a half-ounce of tobacco or a canned food item, or a 2-liter bottle of soda, to be a dollar well spent.
