There are 4 types. Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, etc.) Class B: Flammable liquids Class C: Electrical Equipment Class D: Combustible metals. There are also different combination extinguishers like A,B; A,B,C; B,C. In addition to the letter classification Class A and B extinguishers receive a numerical rating. The numerical rating system is based on tests conducted by the Underwriter's Laboratory. So, essentially, they all do put out fires. But different "kinds" of fires.

A good question with a good answer. The answer is that there are three different types of fire extinguishers. So no. these are the varieties. The Water tank fire extinguisher (needs to be big), The chemical fire extinguisher (very messy afterwards), and the carbon dioxide fire extinguisher (it is more like a blast of air). but the answer to the second part is that yes, they all extinguish fires if you aim for the base, aim at the top, and the fire may rage.

All fire extinguishers are not the same. Although the goal is the same, to extinguish fire.
First, as others have pointed out, not all fires are the same. You have 5 classes of fire in the United States (A,B,C,D, and K) That's the way we catagorize them anyway, a fire doesn't burn differently if it's in Europe, but they use different letters.
Also, there are a variety of extinguishing agents, Dry Power, About 4 types of Dry Chemical, CO2, Halogenated Agents, Water, Foam, etc. etc.
The trick is to match the best agent for the type of anticipated fire.
The one site already mentioned is pretty good. I happen to think this one is much better as it shows all 5 classes of fire and most types of portable units (and they keep it updated)...
