The new 160 hp 4.0 L Cologne V6 was added to the option list for all models in 1990. The 145 hp 3.0 L Vulcan V6 was introduced to replace the 2.9 L Cologne in rear-wheel drive trucks later in 1990. With the new engines, the only manual transmission available was the 5-speed M5OD-R1.

On the 4 banger they are both Mazda engines, little difference but some upgrades each year to the emission system. You did not list the engine size, 4, 6, or 8. ALso the 4x4 has a different option for the trans. so there may be a housing change for the transmission.
You can check Chliton online to see if there is a difference in a particular section of the engine you have a question on.

in 1989 ford put in a 100hp 2.3L 4cylinder. 1989 and 1990 are identical for the 4 cyl trucks.
in 1989 the V6 rangers came with the 140hp 2.9L V6. in 1990 the V6 models came with a 145hp 3.0L V6 with the 160hp 4.0L V6 available as an option.
