What is all the hype about diamond rings ? Tradition ? Why not another favorite, just as beautiful...yet more unique precious stone ?

Personally I like deep red garnets, luminous opals...even some other not so precious stones...yet are precious to look at and pleases the eye. I know opals are delicate stones...but you get the point.

How 'bout starting a ' movement ' and bucking the system and choosing other stones in special occasion rings ? The message of wearing some other stone other than diamond being..." She (or I'm) unique and a 'common' diamond does not reflect the uniqueness of our love, style, person that she is etc....get creative.

How did diamonds get to be the 'chosen' diamond anyway ? I say get unique...chose a unique stone...or be bold and have no ring at all and just hold each others hands allot knowing your love is true...it will beam from you...others will know and smile. More importantly...you'll know.

Odd concept ?

" Buck7ie "...Jealous of what...being like EVERYONE else...not being unique...expressing my own personal style. What is to be jealous of...a diamond. That is just an object. To be in an authentic relationship where two embrace, value and respect each others hearts is the true value...not some stone on a ring. There are many diamonds or otherwise being flashed around out there...but are their hearts being valued and celebrated? Speaking from experience. That was'nt the point of my question...yet you did bring it up. I know true value...and an object of a stone is not where it's at.

It's a status symbol for many women. The rich ones (or rich-wannabe) always have to one-up their girlfriends on the four c's of a chunk of carbon.

I don't think that I would go as far as saying that diamond rings are 'common and overused', but I do like the idea of being creative. I am an apprentice goldsmith, and we have made a few engagement rings at the place where I work that weren't traditional. One had 3 stones... amethyst, topaz, and (the 3rd may have been a diamond.. I don't remember, but it wasn't the main stone) and another one, that did have some small diamonds on it, but the main stone was a watermelon tourmaline.. and it was a gorgeous ring. I definitely don't think that is an odd concept to want something other than a diamond, but they have become the tradition, and many women like that.

I couldn't agree more.

Diamonds are the "new" fur. They are a fashion statement that is supposed to prove how rich the wearer is, but for the most part, there is a huge amount of cruelty and suffering behind that diamond.

Now that CZ is common, you can't tell a real diamond from a fake anyway so there is no prestige in wearing a huge rock on your finger. Unless you're a known millionaire, people think it's cz.

My wedding ring is an opal. Beautiful. and both myself and my husband's birthstone.

Wouldn't it be far more interesting if people chose a unique stone as well as a unique setting for their wedding ring? We would have so much more creativity and it would be a lot more personal.

I agree with you as well as the person before me. I also like other stones and in fact DO NOT wear a diamond, I requested other stones and a unique design. I think its a lot more personal and more appreciated...

I don't know why its tradition, but I think you should get what you want, not what society says you should have.
