Put on a new timing chain. Sounds like your intake valves are still slightly open on a compression stroke. . You stated you have compression. Is that with your finger in a spark plug hole or with a compression gauge. just because are blows your finger out does not mean your valve timing is correct. I would not trust the harmonic balancer after its seen 125,000 miles. it can be off 4 degrees. If you removed your distributor you can also be 180 out. I would pull the distributor out and turn the rotor 180. and try again.

Try checking the timing chain if its the factory one you might have striped off some of the teeth and this caused the chain to "jump" forward and put it way out of time this will give you spark on all cylinders just not at the right time.

Gee Ben that purring noise is the engine running,,,,,

But in reality it sounds like the timing has slipped....87 huh. I can't recall a distributor......I don't think so. You might look at the cam sensor and see if it has slipped or broken this will allow all the above except actually running.

Are you sure you have spark? Even if you have spark at all 8 plugs when you pull them out, it doesn't mean they fire with the added resistance of fuel and compresion. You might need an ignition coil.
