I don't really think the media pays any attention, not that they hate Linux, many don't they just have better things (they think) to talk about. The media plays to the masses.

It is unfortunate that Linux does not receive better press but it is growing.
Yes linux has 28% of server market - if you lump Linux and Unix that gets even more significant. See http://www.itfacts.biz/index.php?id=P1298 for some projections. (Please, unix guys, don't hate me for putting these two together they are more similar than different.)
You can also see some growth numbers that will get your attention http://siliconvalley.internet.com/news/article.php/3114301

The "desktop" market is just not that strong yet. Here is some good information on that http://www.kryogenix.org/days/2005/08/04/market

The main issue for the desktop market is that there just isn't enough support for programs that people need day to day YET. I keep waiting and screaming for Quickbooks for linux!
Most businesses just have no idea that 90% of the machines they use could probably do just as well with linux as the desktop. Web surfing, email, wordprocessing, etc. So the "mainstream" just doesn't get the word.

The media does not hate Linux but rather does not spend much time on stories that interest so few people.

Linux has about 20% of the server market.
Linux only only has 3% the desktop market versus 95% for windows.

Per:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/coffee-lounge/50218-percent-windows-mac-linux-etc-users.html

"These stats are from the February 2005 issue of Wired. They should still be fairly accurate:"

Under "Desktop OS":
- Windows: 95%
- Linux: 3%

UNIX ... no problem its been around for a very long time.
LINUX, the UNIX wannabe isn't hated it just isn't understood by many people including myself; and I've been using UNIX for a very long time.
