I've recently discovered I'm pregnant (around 4 weeks actually). I don't have a OB/GYN appointment until next week & my regular doctor simply said "you need to check with your OB" when I called to ask him.

I have pretty bad allergies that I use Zyrtec to counter, which is the only med I've found that works, & I also use Afrin nose spray from time to time when the symptoms get very bad sinus wise. I've not really been able to find anything on these meds online. I was wondering if anyone has used either during their pregnancy or if anyone has a link about medications to stay away from during pregnancy.

Thank you in advance.

Zyrtec is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is unlikely to harm an unborn baby. Do not take Zyrtec without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
• Zyrtec passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing baby. Do not take Zyrtec without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Before using Afrin Solution:
Some medical conditions may interact with Afrin Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

* if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

My OB told me Bennydryll(sp) was ok to take once in a while.. but i'm not sure about that early in pregnancy.

Good Luck

First a listing of the FDA pregnancy categories:

A: No risk demonstrated to the fetus in any trimester
B: No adverse effects in animals, no human studies available.
C: Only given after risks to the fetus are considered; animal studies have shown adverse reactions, no human studies available
D: Definite fetal risks, may be given in spite of risk if needed in life threatening conditions.
X: Absolute fetal abnormalities; not to be used anytime during pregnancy

Now.. I looked up Zyrtec, and it is considered a category B. As far as the Afrin goes, it depends on the type of Afrin. One type is category B, the rest are C. Both drugs are something that you and your doctor will have to discuss

I can't remember what my midwife said was ok for allergies, but I know she said afrin was ok to use.... You can call any midwife or ob office and they will probably tell you even if you havn't seen them... I contacted my midwife several wks before my first apointment, and they had no problems answering my questions......
