Love Boston, NYC, and Chicago for things to do....
For chillin', nothing beats the Outer Banks of NC.
Scenery: Any place in Colorado--plus there is the big-citiness of Denver, the "hippie-ness" of Boulder, all the skiing, everywhere, and fun stuff like Pike's Peak, river rafting in the more southern areas (which I did at the age of 55 and LOVED it!), and the Celestial Seasonings Company tour (LOL). The Black Cowboy Museum in Denver is very interesting, too.
What do you like? Where have you been that your family LOVED???

St. Louis, Missouri, even though I live very close to Chicago.
St. Louis has a lot to do,
Arch,
LeClede's Landing,
Busch Stadium,
Anheiser Busch Brewery,
Grant's Farm,
Big Foot 4X4 Incorporated,
McDonnell Douglas-Boeing,
Missouri Botanical Gardens,
St. Louis Zoo,
6 Flags Mid-America,
Meramac Caverns,
The Spaghetti Factory,
Museum of Science and Industry,
and the river boat tours, they are great.

My favorite getaway city has been Key West. It;s the only Carrabbean Island you can drive to. It's a very historic spot if you like that kind of stuff (Truman's Little White House, the monument and graves from the USS Maine battleship, Hemmingway House, Southernmost Point). Plenty of entertainment. Great restaurants. great weather. Lots of crazy stuff to do.

Las Vegas - lots to do and see, Grand Canyon tours, etc.
Boston - great nightlife, theatres, steeped in history, great scenery within driving distance
Washington D.C. - museums, historical sights, if you can get past the stench (LOL)
NYC - similar to Boston but stepped up a notch and more expensive.
Orlando - Disney, International Drive, close to Cape Kennedy, Daytona Beach, etc.
It really depends on what you like to do - shopping, museums, walking tours, non-walking tours, gambling, etc.

San Francisco or Santa Barbara.
Great weather and lots of super day trips if you want to wander a bit. Take two weeks and do them both! Drive up Hwy 1 thru Big Sur and tie in a couple of weekdays in Carmel. (Weekends are too busy in the summer).
Boy do I miss California!
