Langston Hughes'
Mother to Son

In this poem, Hughes writes about a mother speaking to her son about life's experiences. He uses the metaphor of a crystal stair.

Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor --
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now --
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

This is easy if you have lived life any.

A crystal stair would obviously reveal all the nails, tacks, and other things that holds the stair (or your life) together.

You need to live life knowing that you are not always going to know what is going to happen.

Use the following quote also as it is similar to the theme:

Everything becomes a little clearer, I realize what life is all about. It's hangin' on when your heart has had enough, It's giving more when you feel like giving up.
~ In My Daughter's Eyes, Martina McBride

It is about a mother telling her son that life is not as easy as he might think it should be. A crystal stair would be perfect - as a crystal is. The mother is saying that her life is not as perfect as she thought it would be, but that she kept going. All the things on the stairs are things she had to deal with in her life. She wants him to keep going, and not to give up.

She is also telling him not to give up and to hung on. The mother telling her son that life is not as easy as he might think it should be. The mother is saying that her life is not as perfect as she thought it would be, but that she kept going. She wants him to keep going too, and not to give up. I think its about this mother telling her son aboout all the hard times, and bumps in the road but life still goes on and we will get through this together.
