I was in labor for 24 hours. I had light contractions throughout the night until around 4 in the morning when I could no longer sleep. I labored at home until about 12:30 and then went into the hospital at 5 centimeters dilated. I gave birth 8 hours later after stalling at 7 centimeters because I was dehydrated. After I got an IV of fluids I went from 7 to 10 in less than an hour and pushed my son out in 20 minutes. So... the length of labor varies from woman to woman. Listen to your body. Rest when you can. Stay upright when not tired. Walk around if you can. The contractions feel like they're "pulling you apart" because the uterus is being pulled over your baby's head like a turtle neck... it means that your body is working just as it should. Just relax, stay hydrated, have a light snack and go with the flow. The contractions do get a little stronger but they're not unbearable. I was able to give birth naturally with no problem. It's not that bad. Just when you think you can't handle it anymore it doesn't get worse. You can do it. Congratulations, Mommy!!

i can only answer the part about the laying down thing. maybe if you kneel on the floor while resting your head on the bed. i found using the foam rubber pad the gardeners use when pulling weeds works best on the knees. takes the weight off the spine.
i also use this pad when i pray for wisdom and knowledge to deal with the kids.

when the contractions get to about 10 minutes apart head to the hospital or if your water breaks

it sue could be and also look for a bloody tinge on your panties or your water to break.. you may want to call your dr. especially since you are already having problems.
