First, there are 11 people per side. Using the aforementioned 4-4-2 formation, you would have a goalie, 4 defenders, 4 in midfield, and 2 attackers.

As a marine, you would appreciate the strategy of the game of soccer. It's like stratego (if you remember that game).

You can pass the ball wherever you want, but if the ball is played (or kicked) to a player when he is between the last defender and the goalie, then he is ruled offsides. You can pass that last defender at the exact time the the ball is played, but you cannot pass him before that time. So, in short, if you are in full sprint, your teammate passes you the ball, and you pass your defender after the ball is played, but before it gets to you...you are onside...even is also considered to be onside.

If you are in full sprint, and you pass the last defender before your teammate kicks the ball to you, you are now offside.

No hands...unless you are the goalie, or the ball is to be thrown in from the sideline (top of your shoulders is allowed, but be careful not to use the side of your arms...they are considered a hand-ball). Everything else is in play (head, shoulder, thigh, foot, etc...).

For fun, I wouldn't worry too much about this. If you are going to be coaching. Make sure you understand that at a young age, learning spacing, and fundamentals are the most important things.

Good luck!

1. get the ball into the opponents net
2. do not use hand/arm (hence football)
3. keep the ball within the lines
4. no more then 11 players are allowed on the pitch. one of which must be a goaly.

the standard formation is referred to as 4-4-2. 4 people in defence (they prevent the opposition from scoring). 4 in midfield (they try to create positive movement) and 2 in attack (they try to score).

a player is offside when he is between the last defender and the goaly at the time of the pass being made. for fun purposes i would not worry about this rule
