So hockey ended in February for me and I hate it.
I am really active and athletic, but I don't know what to do during the off-season of hockey. Do I run?? Or lift weights or what??? HELP!

Thanks!

I would develop a good track workout and do it three times a week. Warm up for 15 minutes, stretch, then do 3 miles worth of repeats.

What that means is pick a distance between 1 lap and 4 laps, run it hard, rest about 2-3 minutes, and do it again until you reach 12 total laps. Track your times to make sure your last times are competitive with your early times.

Then cool down. You should also do a long run once a week for about one hour or so.

Do some drills as well for stickhandling:

1. Go to a metal shop and have them make you pucks made out of metal. Practice stickhandling with that. When you move to a normal puck, it'll feel so light you'll think your stickhandling air.

2. Put two pucks in front of you, one close to your feet and the other about 2 or 3 feet past that. Get a golf ball and make figure 8's around the two pucks. Do it until you can do it with your eyes closed.

3. Go to a tennis court and jump the fault lines. Squat down and jump from fault line to fault line...don't let two feet touch the ground at the same time! It helps with balance and power in your stride.

Don't worry about bulking up. Work on strengthening your core and your balance. You'll be tough to knock down if you keep low and keep fast.

Hockey is a VERY physically demanding sport. Being in the best aerobic shape on the ice will help you to think about the game around you and keeps you from cheating your fundamentals.

Good luck!

I lift 3 times a week and run 3 times a week (Sunday rest). It works also just running and lifting isn't going to make you better you got to stay crisp on skates and your skills. Don't forget to shoot at anything just to keep you shot good. Also see if your town or city has a spring or summer league you could get into. Hockey isn't like a lot of sports where as if you take a long time off you do get rusty....bad. good luck

Play soccer, lots of running to keep your cardio vascular up, plus you get to fall down and act like you have been shot if someone looks at you the wrong way, lol.

What kind of hockey? You can never have enough practice stickhandling or shooting...even if it's only you on an empty rink.
