What qualities did Andrew Jackson bring to the presidency?

AJ was like most presidents: his personal shortcomings were great, but so was his legacy.

He was strong-headed and stubborn. Ofttimes would not listen to his experienced advisors. But he was far-seeing; by his duplicitous maneuvering he was able to snatch Texas from Mexico (while pretending the US wanted to buy it). This almost doubled the size of the US.

This expansion brought about growth and swung vast resources into the union's pockets.

I think he may have been a drunk, but I cannot find my book on him, so don't treat this as fact. If he was, it would explain his impulsive and many times, mean behavior.

7th prez, did not defer to Congress, first to use "pocket veto" where he didn't sign a bill and it failed to become law--strong president that vetoed more than the first 6 put together. Nullified the National Bank and gave it over to the local and state banks. He had bad relations with the Indians and removed many of them.
