Any conflict can work for a mystery story. If you can't develop one, think instead about your protagonist (main character). Develop the character and try to grow the conflict from the character, rather than the character from the conflict. Try simply writing about a character and, when you get into that character's head and that character's background, the conflict will come.

If you cant think of anything, you need a lot more than depth, my dear. You have no story, no characters, nothing. I fail to see why people come here expecting other people to give them plots to write about. Plots are intellectual property - authors use them themselves. I think your plot should be about someone who has no idea for a story so he sneaks into the house of a famous mystery writer and lifts a couple stories. That is what you are doing here. Pax - C.

How about this? A master detective travels the world over solving cases the local police cannot solve. He has the ability to imagine what the thief/murderer is doing and solve the cases. Then a serial murderer strikes at his own city. After a few weeks and deaths the local police ask him for help. He starts tracking the murderer but he is too clever. Leaves lots of false clues that lead to all sorts of people. Finally one day he steps down from bed and notices the floorboard squeaks. He examined it, lifts it, and finds the murder weapons and realizes HE is the murderer!

Same love interest between two brothers.

The bad guy is the good guy's best friend.

The good guy must go against the wishes of someone important in his life to solve the mystery that will help that someone important unbeknownst to that someone important.
