I think that it is Mandatory, but in your situation it might be different! Honey, I even to this day am scared of my "yearly" visits! This is something we never really get used to. I would have your mom or even yourself talk to your doctor and tell them that you dont want the pap.......Good Luck and dont worry!!!!:) :) Everything will be fine,

The pap smear will most definitely be mandatory. I too had my first pap at 16 and was a virgin. I won't lie and say this procedure is the most comfortable thing you will ever go through, but honestly if you plan on taking good care of yourself pap smears are merely a fact of life for women. I hated them in the beginning -- and still don't particularly care for them -- but now they're just routine and don't bother me anymore. Most doctors will be very gentle and caring with you, especially if they know you're a virgin and never been through a pelvic exam before. Tell your doctor you are nervous and they will talk you through it. Also, be aware that if you go on birth control you will be required to get a pap once a year before they refill your prescription. Remember, it's for your own good -- like going to the dentist (sorry, bad example). This test will detect problems like cervical cancer. It's good peace of mind! Try not to sweat it!

Oh, and by the way, the pill never made me gain weight. Before, my periods were so erratic, unbelievably heavy (always had accidents), and lasted 7-10 days! Since going on the pill, they are on time down to the hour (no lying), are light and last 4-5 days. I love it!

God bless and good luck!

the pap test is NOT a big deal. Its basically a tiny pinch and done in 2 seconds. When your Dr does a vaginal exam it needs to be complete to rule out any problems and that would include a pap smear. Its rare but people your age can have cancer and that is a screening method for that. You're 16 and need to let the Dr do his/her job and do the complete exam. I know I was freaked out when I had to go to the ObGyn at 15 and 16 but looking back its not that big of a deal.

As for the birth control, sometimes it adds weight but sometimes you have to find the one that is best for you. Usually "the shot" is what makes you gain the most weight, its WAY worse than the pill. With the new "low hormone" pills out now your Dr should be able to give you one that is good. I never had normal periods until I got on birth control. there are positives to it though...cleared my skin up wonderfully and leveled out my hormones( I didnt snap as much!).

Your mom obviously has your best interests at heart. It will be done in a few minutes and you will realize you freaked out for nothing.

Good Luck!

The Pap smear will depend on your Dr. Because you are a virgin the pap smear is not really required for the Dr. to prescribe you birth control but its best that you allow the Dr. to determine if birth control will regulate your period. There may be an underlying condition that is causing you to have an abnormal period... such as a condition called endometeriosis.
That being said the Dr. will probably recommend a pap smear and I would recommend that you allow him to do one. Be informed.... ask for the smallest speculum and be sure that you inform the Dr that you are a virgin.
The pill does not make you gain weight, but it can increase your appetite.. if you do a good job of watching what you eat there will not be any real weight gain...

I would be truthful to the doctor and he/she may defer the pap. I certainly could not blame you for not wanting one. I have always been on the slim side so the birth control pill did not make me put on weight, in fact I weighed 110 lbs and was 5'6" for many years of being on it. There are medical reasons to take the pill such as a cyst and heavy periods. But if you are not sexually active I do not see any reason to take it unless necessary. It made me want to throw up every day, like I was pregnant.

Sorry kid time to grow up. As for making you fat they are all different. If you don't have severe cramping and everything else is fine why birth control. Stress does mess with your periods. The paps doesn't hurt its just more embarrassing. If you must just think about something else. It just takes a few minutes and your done. If your not having normal periods odds are he/she will want to make sure your inners are OK. So there's the head up on that.

Birth control pills only make you put on weight if you are on the wrong one - took me 3 different pills to find the right one. Papsmear is recommended if you are over 18 or are having sex but it is really not something to worry over...only takes 3mins. Just think of something else while the doctor is down there. If your period is not normal than you should definately see a doctor though.

Us "talking you into it" isn't going to determine what is going to happen. If you plan on keeping yourself healthy, you're going to have to get a pap smear one day. It's not that bad. It is uncomfortable, but it's worse if you don't calm down and relax. I know. I was scared to death the first time I got one. Your doctor will most likely be gentle with you. If it's your first time, they usually walk you through everything they're doing. Just relax. It doesn't take more than a minute if you just relax and get it over with.

It's for your own good if you don't want cervical cancer or anything like that.

the doctor will perform a pap smear. try to relax--it's not a big deal. if you're tense, it might make it uncomfortable for you. it will last, like, a minute. the pill wont make you fat, just remember to take it at the same time each day so that you don't have any break through bleeding. it will be nice for you to know EXACTLY when to expect your period.

Possibly your mom thinks you might be having sex. Reassure her that you are not (if that's the case). A pap smear is not a big deal (especially if you're having sex), but if you are not, that's a different story. Be honest with your mom, because it sounds like she's just trying to help you. Honesty is so important. I sense that you are not being honest. Good luck; take care.
