From what I have learned in computer classes it should go into effect at the most within 24-48 hours. However it is most generally effective emmediately.

Like many have said it depends on the actual Virus, A virus program has to be run before it can infect your computer. Viruses have ways of making sure that this happens. They can attach themselves to other programs and as soon as you launch the infected program, the virus code runs. You might receive an infected file on a disk, in an email attachment, or in a download from the internet. As soon as you launch the file, the virus code runs. Then the virus can copy itself to other files or disks and make changes on your computer.

It depends on type of virus. Some affect it right away as to where others cant slowly do its damage over time.

Not that Long, It could be from seconds to minutes, but if no, anti-Virus Software is'nt installed, you just might need to Partition your hard Drive, And Reinstall Windows...

some will effect it immediately or kill a harddrive on the first reboot ... it depends on the virus ..some are like timebombs and set to go off at a certain time or with a certain application launching ..

Sometimes on a web search, it will hijack your browser.

honestly, there are so many viruses out there that do very different things, it can take acouple minuites, seconds, hours, it can start when you log in, do something right before you log out, start when you start a certain program, open a certain file, and more...hope this helps :)
