there are a fair amount of people who may identify as lesbians who also identify as male to some degree, and take male names as a way to free themselves from single gender roles or identities

I've never known of a lesbian who has done that, but I do know transgendered people who have.

Perhaps they feel that those names better fit who they are and how they identify. Some women, lesbian or not, don't feel particularly girly, and might like "Al" better than "Alexandra" and so on.

They are just being consistent to their feelings that they are men. So they even talk like men, dress like men, with gestures like men and make their names appear as men.
