Upon closer examination ( Powell of 1887) and completion of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railways, spawned the
United States Geological Survey in order to classify this " Arid Region " to demonstrate the diversity and potential for agriculture that was truly there and tended to foster the Jeffersonian ideal of a dominating, agrarian society. !873 and 1877 developed and expanded the Homestead Act and we were off and running.
It is broadly thought that impetus for agriculture to flourish in the great plains id owed to the development of barbed wire (Glidden) and the windmill to pump water. One could argue that it was really due to indomitable, adventurous, and hard working people fueled by the good old American initiative to make money and sell land. Actually, far more land was purchased than granted through the homestead acts.
