Anyone know the history of denim?

I have to give a presentation, and I remember something about denim being used as a tent or something? I can't really remember... any help would be nice

Tent fabric fashioned into pants (during the 1849 CA gold rush I think) by Levi Strauss. Very durable so they became rather popular. Strauss was probably the person who had the best financial success of the gold rush.
