decided to run Registry Mechanic, and I choose the Compact Registry option, and it compacts and optimizes the registry, then it asked me to restart the computer now it won't startup, and all it is is a black screen that reads NTLDR file missing, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to retstart, and I press it, and the same message pops up. I hope someone can help me restore my computer because I really need the help, and I hope I didn't ruin it. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!

P.S.

I searched a lot of other sites for topics on this issue, and it seems I need the Windows XP disc my computer came with in order to fix the problem, and it didn't come with the disc when we bought the computer so I fear there's going to be a major issue with this.

Is there a program I could download, and then burn to a cd and run on the other computer because the computer I'm on right now has a cd burner.

Simon:

I looked over that link, and sadly it didn't help. My friend is coming over tomorrow with a windows disc so hopefully that will do the trick. Thanks so much for helping me!

You should have gotten the disk with your computer if you bought it brand new, or the operating system can be on your hard drive in a seperate partition. If your computer is showing drives C and D both as local disks then your operating system is on the D drive. You can also find out when you boot up your computer, it will have a message at the bottom of your screen about system restore or repair.
One other thing you can try is to boot up in safe mode and see if you can do a system restore to before you ran the registry cleaner.
If neither of these suggestions work then you will need to get a copy of XP and install it which means formatting the hard drive and all information will be lost. You can try to copy the following files from another XP disk or computer hard drive that is running XP onto a floppy disk and see if they will copy onto your hard drive, it is worth a try before you have to purchase a copy of XP and reformat your hard drive.
The files you need to copy are
i386\ntldr c:\
\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

If they copy over once they are done reboot the computer.
