Thank you all for you input on this laptop; I simply needed reassurance that computer was a good buy and I got it. Unfortunately, I can't choose everyone’s answer as best, as the rules don’t permit me to do so.

Sounds good.
The Duo Core processors are the best. Those are good specs for $1,000.

Before you buy the laptop, make sure
-- The screen is 17"
-- The RAM is near 400Mhz (it should be at least close to this figure for a Duo Core CPU that fast)
-- And that it has a very good video card in it. For a price like that, it should have a video card with 256MB of Video Memory.
If it doesn't match all of these specifications, then in my opinion I think the price is too high.

It is a good buy, even better because it still has windows XP, if you can get an express upgrade to Vista take it, but do not install it untill service pack 1 for vista is released and install that with it. Toshiba's are great computers.

For being $1K, that looks really good. Even unnecessarily good. I mean, what will you be doing that requires 2 gigs of RAM?
But that's beside the point. The specs look good to me. If I were you, I'd check reviews and see the strengths/weaknesses of that model to make sure that it's right for you.
Another comment recommended that you get a laptop with a 17" screen: that's rather nonsensical. I wouldn't go smaller than a 15.4" screen, but that's just MY preference. With specs like that, screen size might not be an issue for you. (The comment also mentioned what to look for in RAM, and I'm fairly certain that RAM is measured in bytes, not hertz.)
The best advice I can give is that you look for reviews. I hope your search is productive!

really good stuff. its really fast as long as you know how to keep spyware off and keep it clean from viruses and stuff...xp is good too because it doesnt require so much power like vista does, and i dont really know what you do on it but 160 gigs for a HDD is really good, you can store alot of music, photos, anything you want....its good, i'd buy it too
