I am doing a debate on whether smoking should be banned or not. Can anyone give me detailed points on WHY smoking SHOULD be banned??

My first reaction was ... smoking what?

It depends upon where the smoking is being done

If someone wants so smoke, let them. So long as they are not contaminating any indoor spaces. So long as they pick up their butts!

Also, they are completely responsible for medical costs for any and all illnesses that can be even remotely traced back to their smoking.

It stinks.

It kills.

It does horrible things to teeth, gums, lungs, skin, the entire body.

I think there are two kinds of people in the world. Smokers and non smokers.

I'm a smoker and believe it or not I don't object to them. I happen to believe the data on second hand smoke is accurate. But at the same time there is something to be said for government telling us what is best for us all. Stand alone bars should be left alone, restaurants I can certianly understand. As long as patrons know to expect smoking it's their choice. I think Florida has probably the most reasonable policy. No smoking until after 10pm, then light em up. That makes rational sense to me.

Smoking only hurts the people that are smoking. Why not ban alcohol instead? Alcohol kills and injures more people than smoking and yet it continues to be in the public's favor.

Smokers are generally in poorer health due to their addiction and resulting lifestyle. A result of their poor health are higher medical and insurance costs for the rest of us. As well as higher taxes, and more tax dollars going to support government medical aide programs(Medicare, etc.) that many smokers must turn to for treatment.
