Someone once told me that Martin Scorsese originally wanted Meryl Streep to star in Gangs of New York, not Cameron Diaz, and I was wondering if that's true? Thanks

Being a big fan of the film O Lucky Man! (1973), Scorsese originally considered using Malcolm McDowell to play Amsterdam. Had Scorsese been able to make this film in 1978, he had planned to cast Robert De Niro in the role of "Amsterdam."
Robert De Niro and Willem Dafoe were considered for the part of Bill "The Butcher" Cutting. Heather Graham, Monica Potter, Mena Suvari, Melanie Lynskey, Vinessa Shaw, Christina Ricci and Claire Forlani all auditioned for the role of Jenny.

This is an undebatable fact. He may not be like my favorite but I love him so much cause he is the best...period. His movies are just perfect. I know that some people think that Gangs of New York and Aviator weren't all that good but I personally love them. He made the best movie of the 70's (Taxi Driver) the best movie of the 80's (Raging Bull) The best movie of the 90's (Goodfellas) and possibly the best of the 2000's (The Departed). If a director is incredibly talented then he may make a movie that defines a genre or is the best of a decade. Any director who does that can retire from the film industry satisfied...but just look at this guy...half the movies this guy has made have become classics. If that isn't incredible talent or the mark of the most awesome director then I am Donald Duck. My favorite Scorsese movie is The Departed. I love this one because of the cast and characters and it was the first Scorsese picture with an actual plot. I love it as it is almost Shakesperean and creates a tragedy about the cost of being a rat and when you lose your identity. My second favorite Director is Peter Jackson because he made LOTR which turned me into a movie buff and has inspired me to become a filmmaker when I grow up. My favorite of his is The Lord of the Rings.

I might be true...Scorsese originally wanted DeNiro, so to pair him up with Streep would have been the best choice at the time....
