That would depend on where you're at, wouldn't it?
And the kind of Company where you get the job, don't you think?
A small Company in a Third World Country would pay peanuts compared to a Corporate Giant in USA or UK, you see.
Cheers!

okay if you teach yourself right now and i am asuming you are older then 25 then you can be expecting to make around 30 000 because the best job you would probally get is to do local sites or if you are lucky and if you can get your name out there then you might be able to work in a company.
The thing about web design is that you need to know many different programs and how to use the effectively as well you need to know how to make a website good and productive. To get both these skills is really hard if you teach yourself and to make good money is even harder.
My advice is go to college - because you will learn the skills you need and will learn how to make a website good - you can take night courses - and you will hopefully then by able to skip the local stuff and go straight to the company stuff.

It depends on a lot of aspects. Let me help you out here. Alright. lets say you know only web designing and no insights on web programming. From my knowledge and startup experience, you have two options: seek for employement or employ yourself. Employ yourself>>get a team of programmers and one or two more web designers and start your company and within 5-6 months wherever you are you should be able to put your company on a positive payroll. When i mean positive payroll, this is after you pay your team and further on. Seek for employement>>seeking for employment for a full time job does not seem too "asking" in today's companies. These companies require hardcore programmers. Web designers only for temporary internship basis. but if you do get selected as a full time web designer you should be able to earn a few thousand dollars and it may not involve a raise. so you may want to check your options.

you can't find a job just because you can use dreamweaver, flash or photoshop. oh, btw, don't tell anyone you use frontpage to design a website.
in order to find a job as web developer you need to be an expert at least 4 of following languages.
1. hand coding HTML
2. JavaScript
3. CSS
4. PHP/MySql
5. ASP/Coldfusion
6. JSP
7. Java
8 C++
9. MS SQL/O-SQL
Web designer is nearly equal freelancer. do you have any idea how many those freelancers out there? 1/6 of population.
only small company will hire such person, their company are barely running, think about what your salary gonna to be.
good luck

it really doesn't matter what kind of education you have, unless you wanted to work for google or pixar. Many multimedia people, such as myself, have taught ourselves by experimenting. This is the best way to learn, and its free! It always helps though to have a degree in Technology, Art, Science, and math, depending on what multimedia stuff you do.
I would recommend starting a portfolio to show when applying for a job. It is not true that you wont get a job if you teach yours elf.
It really annoys me that everyone says you must have education to do this!!! Helloooo. I am 14 and I am a web developer and flash animator. I use advance programs such as Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, etc. and have taught myself.

Bah, you can teach yourself, given you really want to learn. I took one intro to c++ class in college, everything else is self taught. If you haven't any experience in programming, I'd recommend learning one language then picking up others as you go. Once you know one it's mostly just new syntax from there.
Start low, get an assistant/entry level job and work your way along, be sure to keep up on the new stuff as it comes out.
Experience > degree

If you teach yourself...... you won't make any money.
The only way to get a job with a company is to have some certs or some kind of degree to back up your knowledge.
Also, if you do insist on teaching yourself you will need to learn: PHP,Java,Javascript,ASP,HTML, & CSS as well as alot of others. Probably a little C++ to use PHP effectively.
