They both heat great.
Gas is much cleaner and very low maintenance.
Oil can be tempermental and an oil furnace should be checked at least once a year for clean burning and possible cleaning, oil filter change, etc.
Oil breaks down more than gas.
When's the last time you heard of someone running out of gas? (although I've seen low gas pressure in extreme weather but usually is a problem from the gas company)
You always have to worry about keeping oil in the tank or set up a scheduled refill.
Oil has more moving parts to break down and maintain.
Go for the gas.

Gas. it's easier to maintain and operate. Oil nozzles need replaced along with fuel filters on a regular basis. Gas...just change the air filters.

Gas, because oil "stinks" kind of. Really, I'm not joking I grew up with it and it seems to have a "smell".
I think oil started because it was too "remote" to get gas, but with gas you could also use propane tanks (those huge ones) IF you're remote.

I asked this question to the guys from PG&E and they said that gas heaters are better to use since they consume less electricity. Hope this helps!!

If you want smelling rooms, dirty walls and ceilings use oil.
Most of us prefer clean burning gas.

Gas - burns cleaner, less messy. cost may be a factor.
