I think the "Sanjaya scam "as you call it, lends an air of excitement to the competition! People tend to love the "underdog" in competitions and I think they like the idea of the possibility that someone such as him could win. What many people refuse to acknowledge is that AI is not purely a 'singing competition'. It is about likability, attractiveness and any other kind of appeal one may have. I actually don't think Sanjaya is that bad of a singer! He needs coaching and help with projecting the song.As far as I've heard AI is more popular than ever and the voting is off the charts! Each week the slate is clean as far as I'm concerned and they all have an equal chance of getting my vote. That's part of the excitement of it! As far as pure singing ability, raw talent, the only real players, again in my opinion, are Melinda, Lakisha, and Jordan, I don't think sanjaya is any worse than the rest of them and in some ways better!

I'm sorry but I don't agree. I still love American Idol. I still look forward to it each week. I wish people would actually vote for the best singers instead of voting for popularity or whatever singer the judges may be pushing for that particular week.
I also think it is horrible that there is a web site voting for what they feel is the worst singer just to try to upset the ratings and to mess with the overall show.
The same thing is going on with the Stern Show. Why are people such jerks?
Yes, there are some things wrong with American Idol but it isn't about American Idol itself, it is about the foolishness involved around it.
The show itself is great. I also believe that the singers are great this year and have been great every year since it first started. I can't say anything about the first year as I didn't watch it that year, though.
Also, Sanjaya is not that bad of a singer. He is just young and inexperienced. Therefore, he doesn't project his voice and doesn't entertain as well as the other more experienced singers in this competition but I believe most of the people on this forum are way too harsh on this 17 year old kid. I'd like to see them try to sing in his shoes. I know I can't do it.
Why is everyone so quick to sound so mean? I know I will end up with loads of thumbs down on here but I have to write what I stand for.

As strange as this may sound, even though this season is the "jump the shark" for American Idol it is BECAUSE of the Sanjaya scam that people are tuning in. Perhaps even moreso, in the weeks to come, in amazement that this kid is still in the competition.
If anything, if Sanjaya DOES go home soon, the ratings will drop because the rest of the pack is just boring, with the exceptions of Melinda, LaKisha, Jordin and Blake.
Though if Sanjaya should WIN, the show will be "tainted" and unless they change the voting procedures, "American Idol" will be done.

Obviously it always was a joke. The most infamous example of this was in season 2. Ruben Studdard, the winner, has all but dropped off the face of the earth. His runner-up, Clay Aiken, became a household name. As for season 5, I'm willing to bet that Chris Daughtry has a slightly larger fanbase than incumbent Taylor Hicks. Clearly- winning or losing on the show has nothing to do with how succesful a contestant will become. I love how much attention VFTW (Vote for the Worst) is getting now-- after 6 seasons, Fox needs its ego knocked down a couple pegs! Come on people, AI is just boring now.

Yes, and that freak Sanjaya will win because of a flaw in the contest design.
There should only be one vote allowed per number.
If he wins you will see that changed.
I think the field was weak to begin with.

i have seen idol in Britain and Poland, and I'm here to say, that this American idol makes America look stupid and has turned the show into a joke,i really have only seen small parts, and it seem to me that people are just voting for the fun and not on serious notes, this sanjay kid,is just that a no talent kid who sadly enough has just started his 15 min of Hollywood fame,it is a sad show, when their are real contestants who want with what seems passion to be a real American idol and other like the sanjay kid who knows he is terrible but comes up with stupid gimmicks to stay on and America is eating it up,the show better mature up and get serious or it will no longer mean what it is meant to

Actually, even though he makes my skin cringe, he is probably increasing viewership, due to the media coverage and the fact that he's outrageously bad. But no, I don't feel like it's a waste of time to watch it, for the most part I am enjoying it, although I wish he'd go crawl under a rock.
