any kind of lubricant(vitamin E oil, mederma, cocoa butter, etc) rubbed into the scar is doing the same thing....attempting to break down the scar tissue by using massage and flatten it/even it out. It will lessen the appearance but not completely remove it. You always should monitor your sun exposure, but especially watch it with scars! Scars can become red and raised from sun exposure so always use a high SPF!

Microdermabrasion, chemical peels, or dermal fillers will probably give you a better result.

Microdermabrasion can be done by a dermatologist or medspa facility. The buff off the top layers of skin to reveal the healthy fresh skin underneath so you're working to smooth out the scar. You can also buy an "at home" kit (Neutrogena has one) that are not expensive, but takes longer to get the result you would get by professionals.

Chemical peels are best done by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist and use chemicals instead of the buffing technique to reveal the healthy underlayers of skin. They can be pricey but you get results the fastest, although there will be some healing time and sun exposure needs to be limited for a long time afterwards.

Dermal fillers, collagen or Restylane, are injected into the depressed part of the scar to even it out with the surrounding skin. Instant results but only last a few months. Collagen you need to have a skin test to make sure you're not allergic beforehand but most of the new fillers like Restylane you dont have to take a skin test.

Good Luck!

I have almost totally removed the scars left from my gall bladder removal surgery using arnica oil (topical, do not take internally). A good source is the essential oil company. The lady that runs this site grows most of her plants and distills the oils herself in order to control quality. She also sells oil distilling equipment that you can use to distill your own oils, if you should be so inclined. In any case, I order arnic absolute, which is a thick, gooie oil that will last a long time if used sparingly. I like to poke a thin wire (paper clip) into the bottle and wipe the oil directly on the scar twice a day. My scars have almost dissapeared over a two year period. You can aslo mix the arnica absolute with pure olive oil and use more freely. But I find it works quite well when used directly, full strength.
