Okay, 3 part question.

1) Where do you recharge the AC on a 98 dodge neon?

2) What type of recharge kit should I get for it? (I saw one called "134a", or something like that).

3) How do I recharge the AC?

i own a repair shop and you need to have this done,if you have to ask all these questions about it,you might mess it up by trying to add to it,this can easily be messed up,and then it may cost you a lot of money to repair it ,do your self a favor, and have it done, good luck i hope this helps.

1 - If it is not cooling right now, you probably have a leak somewhere, but there are two ports inline. One line will be thicker than the other. The bigger is the low side, and the thinner is the high side. You will see two bicycle type caps, one larger than the other. The larger is the low side cap, the smaller the high side cap. Under these caps are service ports, you can remove them, and see a type of valve.

2 - Older cars use R-12 which is extremely costly now, and is not produced, reason for the cost rising. Most cars today use 134a, which is safer for the environment and the ozone. Your car uses 134a, but if it did use R-12, you can convert the system to 134a, by doing a retrofit. Some times these work, sometimes they don't, but a risk for those who want A/C bad enough.

3 - You need a can tap, which punctures the refrigerant can and allows you to add the refrigerant to the "LOW" side of the service line. Somewhere under your hood, there will be an accumulator, a big silver can looking thing connected to these lines. On top of it there will be numbers, these numbers will tell you how much in "lbs. and ozs." your system takes. You have to add that much to your system so it will cool properly.

Most shops use gauges to monitor the pressures on the low and high side. If your not familiar with this, I'd suggest taking it to a shop. You can damage or hurt the system. And if you have a leak, you will need to repair it first. Shops use a dye with black light to find leaks after charging the system. If you over charge the system, you can blow something or cause something to leak, or worse. Leaks can be anywhere, from under the hood, to within the dash. You also have other stuff to look for, like proper cooling from the cooling fan(s) to see if they turn on or speed up for proper air flow that pulls or pushes air through the condensor to help in cooling. There's a lot involved in A/C work, not just adding freon. I'd suggest taking it to a shop for service. One point, do not add any type of "STOP LEAK" to an A/C system. This clogs the system and will cause you more problems in the long run.

Forget about recharging the AC by yourself. Recharging R134 requires specific equipment. If released, the R134 will cause a lot of damage to the environment. Unlike mechanical problem, chemical gas can be quite dangerous.

This is for your vehicle, short and sweet.

This is for another vehicle. The same principle for ANY vehicle. Also, the auto zone sells a book for A/C explaining everything. Also they sell the R134 with a gauge and instructions which are very simple. I know this summer I plan to buy a vacuum pump. In the long run, you save money, and during the summer you can be "Chilling out" literally. hahaha

In your car's instructions, it says it is illegal to service someone's car FOR MONEY. So I could go to your house and do it. All my friends do each others. hahaha
