We used to only have brown paper bags and cardboard boxes for groceries. The stores will probably start selling cloth bags. During one of our conservation spells, I used the cloths bags and really did not like them at all. They got stinky and I didn't know where to store them. I can see why the plastic bags are being banned--because they fly all over the place and get stuck everywhere in the environment and are no doubt harmful to wildlife and birds, but I don't know about banning them. Good luck.

The really funny thing about this is that plastic grocery bags first came into being because the environmentalists pitched a fit that paper grocery bags were contributing to deforestation. So grocery stores converted to plastic to appease them. Now the environmentalists are pitching a fit that plastic grocery bags don't biodegrade and are made from petroleum products.

It just goes to show that the environmentalist movement never considers the "Law of Unintended Consequences". They just insist that "something...anything" be done to fix their current pet cause, but they never bother to think about whether the fix might be worse than the problem.

Leave it to san francisco. Ban the bag and rotc and say ok to everything else. We used to use paper bags. Or string bags. Or a thing like the pull along suitcases, but it was open and you put your groceries in it. Or go to a store across the line and use plastic bags. hahahaha

Ireland banned stores and supermarkets from supplying plastic bags to their customers two years ago .It has been very successful.you no longer see plastic bags caught up in hedgerows or blowing around on waste ground the environment gains tremendously as a result .Everybody brings their own shopping bags with them when they shop. The stores are allowed to sell you a plastic bag they must charge 15 cents for it and the money goes towards improving the environment

How about having a 10 cents deposit on the bags, similar to the returnable pop bottles. All the profits could go to a "clean up the city" fund. .......or....... how about a bagging fee( paper or plastic), this might encourage people to bring their own reusable bags.

DON'T WORRY GUYS, Raliegh Co., KBC, American Container Inc. and dozens of others who make the plastic bags, are taking care of it. There's millions of $$ in this. They are not going to sit back and say "Oh my, me o my, what are we going to do?!"
NO, they've already started to make recyclable plastic bags.
Things will be o.k. if you still want plastic.

You may end up paying for a paper bag yet!
