I removed cover. Problem is spring often sticks. But it says Do Not Oil. Can I use WD40 to free spring with out fear of fire? Apparently built up dust makes it stick. So it seems.
Thanks.

the reason for not using oil is that oil collects dust.. i would recommend you go buy a can of compressed air to blow out the dust buildup...anything you put in there to lubricate will collect dust so dont put anything in it including grease...you can also stretch spring just a bit to give it some of its tension back

WD40 should be fine. Those things are low voltage, but you still might get a quick shock. Or, just replace it with a new one. If the thing is especially nice, replace just the spring. If it's non descript, get a nicer one. I got a bronze frog on a verdigris copper lily pad for about $7. Looks great. Nice conversation piece, fit theme of house. But, you might find something you like better. The activators aren't expensive probably because they do tend to break down.

buy some contact cleaner, brake cleaner will work, or rubbing alcohol, all of them will clean away the dirt and evaporate. You can buy a little tube of non conducting grease if it continues to stick, but not wd40
