It is important to note in this discussion that the way economics works is that an increase in relative income disparity is caused by higher rates of growth in the upper class than the lower class, but again, this is because of the growth to begin with. To illustrate my point, here's an example:

Scenario A (Middle Class)
Upper Class - 10 ("wealth units")
Middle Class - 8
Lower Class - 6

Scenario B (No Middle Class)
Upper Class - 14
Lower Class - 9

*That is to say that, while the poorer people may seem poorer than they were before on a relative basis, economic growth dictates that this disparity comes at everyone's benefit.

Upper...I think the shrinking middle class is caused by Educated Women. They primarily marry Educated men which leads to 2 high earners. Blue collar folks are more likely to have the man work and the woman stay home or on the lower end...single moms. On a purely economic basis this lead to lower incomes. For this reason the middle class is shrinking as money splits between the two.

The way the economy is going, I would say that middle class people would end up in the lower class. It seems like everytime you turn around, the price of everything is going up, up, up. If you are not getting pay raises to off set those price hikes, you have less money to spend.

Blessedly, -- and comparatively speaking --I would move into the upper category based on my career, earnings. Most people wouldb't and I find this issue very disturbing. The shrinking middle class in the US today is the most major and the scariest social trend I see occuring.

It seems to be the same as we define middle class as one of the two other options.

I think I would probably fall into the lower category, tho i feel like i'm as low as it can get. hopefully, they won't squeeze us out.
