Its a basic sign of admiration and respect, this is done mostly at world cup match ups when you know you will encounter a formidable opponent or any other game, after a long 90+ minutes of playing you offer your jersey to the player with which you where matched up against or any other team player, which made you work hard during the game.

Whenever a game ends, as a sign of respect, the captains trade each others jerseys. If you watch carefully, every single team does that.

Of all the years ive watched soccer (which has been a while) ive only seen one team not offer there jersey and thats Mexico, everytime the U.S. spanks them they get all but hurt.
