How come some people do not have compassion for others? For example, even just now I posted a question about why others in poor countries die of hunger when we have enough money and food in the US to ensure no one ever dies of hunger. Some of the answers indicated that it was the starving peoples fault. Some indicated "who cares?". Is everyone born compassionate and then it gradually disappears or are some people just heartless? Thoughts??

We live in a selfish society and generally our biggest concern is our own problems because they are happening to us, so we feel they are more important problems.
Some will tell jokes because they don't know how to respond or maybe they dont care. Also everyone probably has the capabillities to be compasionate, yet not everyone will be for various reasons, some might see it as a sign of weakness or uncool etc.

I think there is a reason for why people just dont care but i cant seem to pinpoint it exactly. Maybe its a psychological thing and how certain events in a persons life effect their attitude on things. Like if someones mom gets cancer, they didnt care about the problem before, but they all of a sudden care about it now because they are directly effected by it.

That or people are just too self centered and into their own little thing that they think that since they are blessed with food and clean water nothing else matters. They think they are superior to those who, by no fault of their own, dont have those things necessary to survive, even though they wont admit it.

because we're selfish.

and sorry to be morbid, but everyone will die of something, so whether it's hunger or cancer or an accident or old age... let's focus on how people should live the life they have.

make sure you have some compassion toward someone today.

I think it's mostly the way you are raised...if you have never been shown to give a crap about others, then why would you? There are some rare cases of chemical imbalances also.
