George Romero is an ITALIAN American. So, none of his movies really qualify EXCEPT for "Zombi". "Zombi" is Lucio Fulci's cut of "Dawn of the Dead", which is bloodier than the American version, and has most of the humor edited out.

Italian zombie films are usually more gorey than American films in general tho. The best Italian zombie flick I've seen is "Zombi 2", Lucio's "sequel" to Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Here in the U.S. it's more popularly known as just "Zombie".

"Hell of the Living Dead" is good and gorey, but it's technically lacking (lots of stock footage) and they stole the entire soundtack of "Dawn" and put it in their movie. Burial Ground is also quite bloody.

P.S. Someone mentioned Dead Alive. That's a new Zeland flick by Peter Jackson (LOTR). He also did a gruesome little zombie flick called "Bad Taste". The recent Australian effort "Undead" is also very good, tho it's more of a sci-fi comedy movie rather than a gorefest.

The best zombie movie is probably the original Dawn of the Dead, although I'm quite partial to Shaun of the Dead, because I think it's the most inventive and exciting zombie movie I've ever seen.

Italians do have the edge. I still like "28 Days Later" When my friends want to see it, I neglect to tell them it's NOT THE SEQUEL to the Sandra Bullock movie "28 Days"
How delightful!!
