Sports today, just as the Roman Games did, provide a vicarious outlet for aggression in society. By identifying with one or the other of the sides in a competition, the crowd can release their aggression in a mostly harmless way. This provides a means for the government (no matter which country) to keep mass unrest to a manageable level. Sometimes, this results in riots at sports stadiums, but keeps them from rioting against their living conditions. In other words, they serve as a means to channel aggression in the populace away from the government.
