The human race has always been this way ananthas.
These days we have television, computers, newspapers, and we have radios, along with i-pods, recorders, cameras of all stripes, we also have video digital cameras to go with our computers, telephones. Land line telephones, satellite telephones, telephones that take pictures, and record, you can use for a typewriter to text your message. We have laptops, and computer controlled cars, computer controlled houses. We have access to forty different magazines on one rack alone and then five different newspapers to contend with. In all of those there are advertisements! Ads in the subway, in the car, the paper and on the radio as well as the television, computer, and magazines even printed along the whole side of a bloody bus!
We are bombarded with what we should have, deserve to have, must have, need to have first, what is owed to us without earning it (at least not today dearies...because you deserve a break today.)
We have always been this way darlin, it's just that in the world we live in; access to all of this is at our fingertips. Just a phone call away, put it on Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club or whatever. If you can't pay up? So what? Bankruptcy is as common as a Visa Card is nowadays.
We haven't taught our children well have we?

i think television and internet has made us more materialistic.we see what people all over the world have and we want it too.im sure people in the past wanted nice things too but they couldnt compare themselves to others as easily.we buy everything on credit so we end up buying things we dont really need or can not afford.advertising makes us feel like we need that 4000 inch tv!or that we need to have things which are ridiculous

Humans have always been self-centered, egotistical and ethnocentric. I think materialism is newer.

We're pretty much as knuckleheaded as ever. We're probably less talented at creating fun for ourselves, since it's done for us, but I'm just guessing.
