I have not completed my BA yet, I am 36, work full-time... Want to teach English in China eventually. Where in NJ can I get some good part time volunteer experience with teaching ESL? I tried Literacy Volunteers but they could never set me up with students in my area (Essex County)... Suggestions?

Jebbie - I understand that quite a few churches offer ESL courses to international students and foreigners living in the States, that might be a good places to look, call some local churches and see if they are offering ESL and volunteer to help out, you can also call local schools and see if they have any international students that need tutoring in ESL

If you are currently in school and working on completing your BA, I would visit the School of Education and volunteer in the ESL tutoring department. Usually the programs are more than willing to take volunteers and will give you insight into teaching opportunities in China.

If you are not currently in school, I would look into starting an ESL program. Some of the programs are 1-2 years and are very beneficial for teacher preparation, especially if you're planning on teaching in other countries.

My brother is currently a teacher in China (has been for 3 years) and he got his undergrad in elementary education and teaching credentials in ESL (some programs don't require the teaching credentials though).

Take a look at http://www.alleducationschools.com/featured/tesol-education/?location=NJ for ESL programs in New Jersey.

Hopefully this helps and good luck to you! That's exciting!

Contact some social service agencies like Salvation Army, Goodwill, Easter Seals, the County Mental Health Clinic, etc. They probably have resources regarding recent immigrants and classes.

You can contact the folks over at http://Journeyeast.org My understanding is that you can take their online TEFL course and do your practicum in China while getting paid. Why volunteer here when you can spend that valuable time in China working and getting paid for it?
