I think awe is not spelled correctly.
Awe means showing respect or fear, but in the context of your sentence is should be spelled Aw, meaning, Shoot--I made a mistake.
Aw is an interjection showing emotions of dissappointment, because of a mistake.

I don't know whether they were in awe of what they saw as in great beauty, admiration or wonder, but it sounds more like "aw" they were disappointed.
